High School Preparation: Pastoral Care

Milton College is committed to the care and welfare of all its students.

We accomplish this in many ways:

  1. A Timetabled Pastoral Care Program.
Each Tuesday afternoon teachers work in small groups with students, as part of a structured welfare curriculum. Students have an opportunity to discuss issues of concern to them. They also study human development and growth; managing change (both physical and cultural); ethics and values; personal relationships (including respect, friendship and understanding the feelings and attitudes of others); promoting self-esteem and personal responsibility; stress management; and time management.
  2. A Code of Conduct Manual.
Students and guardians are all aware of the behaviours expected by students at Milton College, including timeliness; dress code; homework policy; salutations; bullying and the use of English.
  3. Well Articulated Procedures for Those Students who Break The Rules, including counselling, detention, student contracts, suspension and expulsion.
  4. A Homework Diary.
The diary serves many purposes, including organising the student; providing guardians with information about what was studied in class that day and homework due for that evening; and a space to communicate in writing with the guardian.
  5. Teachers That Care.
Education takes place in a genuinely caring environment that is warm and friendly, with strong support systems, including a trained student counsellor and personnel who are fluent in most students' native language.
  6. The Best Homestay Arrangements.
Students are only placed in homestay once a home has been inspected and all adults living in the house have been police-checked. Guardians must agree to certain conditions, including curfew times for students; checking that students have completed homework; and agreeing to meet with the Principal upon request. Milton College prefers to place students in Australian homestays to facilitate student acquisition of English and acculturation. They also get an opportunity to develop friendships with Australian children.
  7. A Warm and Friendly School Environment.
Milton has large, light classrooms, a student common room, access to a computer room, access to one of the best libraries in Sydney and a lunch-time study room.  There is a kitchen with boiling hot water for cooking, sinks, refrigerators and micro wave ovens.
